    • Abstract:
The article discusses boundaries between private, domestic, and public displays of mourning in Mexico City, Mexico, as of May 2012. The author argues that western medical models of grief in Mexico were extended from private grief to shared and visual ritual performances. The article examines what the author terms as "do-it-yourself" practices of mourning, including the acts of visualizing, materializing, and socializing the deceased. It discusses how photographs and other objects of commemoration assist the living and how contemporary mourners memorialize the dead as well as the role played by professional funerary workers in the grieving process.
