      The article presents the acceptance speech given by Karen Hesse, author of the book "Out of the Dust," at the annual meeting of the American Library Association for receiving the 1998 John Newbery Medal. In the speech Hesse discusses her love of historical fiction and her research of the Dust Bowl in Oklahoma for her book "Out of the Dust."
