      The author comments on the increase in self-confidence among businessmen in Italy and France. According to the author, businessmen in both countries are seeking out new markets abroad and face foreign competition at home, unlike before when they felt that their survival depended on import barriers and cartels. Details of the business growth in both countries since January 1959 are presented. The author find this trend in Italy as the most striking.
