Cinema, Women Teachers, and the 1950s and 1960s.

I remember the teachers in the movies, the women who sacrificed and trained children to follow the paths of our fathers. In the home, the father reigned supreme, his authority unquestioned despite instances of psychological and physical intimidation or abuse. In the school, a domestic space that mirrored the hierarchy of the home, he also reigned supreme. In those days, in those films, narrative form and images reassured us of an orderly world or at least a world that if chaotic, could be restored through the patriarchy. I am interested in those images and in their power to limit our imaginations. How have we been interpellated as women--as women teachers--by those images? [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
