EL DEBATE SOBRE EL VELO ISLÁMICO EN GRAN BRETAÑA: EL MULTICULTURALISMO LIBERAL Y LA IDENTIDAD NACIONAL. (Spanish)

Debates on the Islamic veil in Europe have become a mirror of national identity. On the one hand, each country manages cultural diversity according to its selfunderstanding as a nation. On the other hand, conflicts around these issues have ended up raising the question about what keep us together as a nation. The context of crisis of multiculturalism that surrounds the debates has derived in campaigns in favor of a strongest feeling of belonging that safeguards social cohesion. This paper analyzes to what extent the understanding and the discourse on national identity are present in the controversies on the veil in Great Britain. The debates start using the British way of understanding liberalism. But they have moved to a broader arena that addresses national identity. The reassessment of «British» has taken place in close connection to the crisis of multiculturalism, blamed as responsible for social division. In this context the veil is considered as a symbol of that lack of integration and separateness. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Los debates sobre el velo islámico en Europa se han convertido en un espejo de la identidad nacional. Por un lado, porque cada país gestiona la diversidad cultural de acuerdo con la manera en que se entiende a sí mismo como nación. Pero, además, en todos los países los conflictos han terminado por plantear la cuestión más profunda de qué es lo que nos mantiene unidos en este país concreto, en un contexto de crisis del multiculturalismo, que ha generado campañas en favor de un sentimiento más fuerte de pertenencia que garantice la cohesión social. Este trabajo analiza en qué medida la comprensión y el discurso sobre la identidad nacional están presentes en el debate y en la respuesta dada por Gran Bretaña a los conflictos sobre el velo islámico. Muestra cómo, desde una argumentación que utiliza el lenguaje y las instituciones del multiculturalismo liberal, ha pasado a plantearse en relación con el debate más amplio sobre la identidad nacional y la viabilidad del multiculturalismo. El velo es considerado, así, como un claro símbolo de esa separación y falta de integración a la que ha llevado el multiculturalismo. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
