Rethinking the Two Spheres. An Historiographical Review. (English)

Feminist theories on the public/private divide thrived in United States' academia from the 1960s, closely linking the private with a domestic sphere of reproduction, household tasks and family relations. Thus, started a rich and prolific historiographical trend that has produced important theoretical and methodological debates and has fostered diverse research lines in different national academic contexts. The public/private binary continues to be a strong analytic framework, although overlapped by contesting and diverse references. The present bibliographic revision intends to trace the main debates and ways of approaching the topic, focusing on the 19^th Century, that have taken place in the United States, Britain, France and Spain. Las teorías feministas sobre la dicotomía público/privado se empezaron a configurar en el mundo académico norteamericano a partir de los años 1960 y pusieron en primer plano la vinculación de lo privado con una esfera de relaciones familiares, tareas domésticas y reproducción. A partir de entonces se inició una rica y fructífera corriente historiográfica que ha generado importantes debates teóricos y metodológicos y ha impulsado diversas líneas de investigación en diferentes contextos académicos nacionales. Los conceptos «público» y «privado», por lo demás, siguen teniendo fuerza en la actualidad, aunque atravesados por referencias diversas y concurrentes. La presente revisión bibliográfica pretende delinear los contornos de las principales discusiones y formas de abordar esta cuestión, en lo que se refiere al siglo xix, que han tenido lugar en Estados Unidos, Reino Unido, Francia y España.
