      This article analyses the relationship between academic work and family life based on two studies on academic careers and gender carried out in Chile and Spain. Thirty-six semi-structured interviews were conducted with female university professors. The interviews address academic practice and working conditions and factors that hinder or facilitate the reconciliation of academic work and family life, such as the presence or absence of gender policies in universities. The research results show that it is the female academic as an individual who is in charge of reconciling work and life; that there is a strong gender bias in which men hardly appear as co-responsible; and that the university does not take up its institutional role of creating gender policies that create an environment that facilitates worklife balance.       Este artículo analiza la relación entre el trabajo académico y la vida familiar1 a partir de dos investigaciones sobre carrera académica y género desarrolladas en Chile y España. A partir de 36 entrevistas semiestructuradas realizadas a profesoras universitarias, se abordan el desarrollo de la carrera académica, las condiciones de trabajo y los factores quedificultan o facilitan la conciliación entre el trabajo académico y el ámbito familiar, como la presencia o ausencia de políticas de género en las universidades. Los resultados de investigación, en ambos contextos, muestran que es el individuo el actor responsable de conciliar los tiempos de trabajo y vida; que existe un fuerte sesgo de género en el que los hombres apenas aparecen como figuras corresponsables, y que la universidad tampoco se responsabiliza de crear un entorno que facilite la conciliación.
