This article explains the formation of hurricanes. Hurricanes are storms that form over the tropical waters of the Atlantic Ocean, Caribbean Sea, Gulf of Mexico, or North Pacific Ocean. Hurricanes need warm water to grow. As hot water vapor rises from warm water, it turns into clouds and rain. As the warmed air rises, more air flows into the area where the air is rising, creating wind. The Earth's rotation causes the wind to follow a curved path over the ocean. That is why hurricanes rotate, or spin. A hurricane consists of bands of thunderstorms that spin toward the center, or eye of the storm. Many hurricanes die without ever reaching land. If one does head for land, weather satellites warn people beforehand.
