    • Abstract:
This article presents information on black-berried hollies. In the coastal plain from Nova Scotia to Florida and Texas, the big gallberry or Ilex coriacea grows in small thickets. The small gallberry, called inkberry, is also native to the coastal plain from Virginia southward. Both of these have black berries. The black-fruited Japanese holly hardly existed in southern gardens before World War I. Today, it is one of the most valuable fine-leaved evergreens. When raised from seed this holly has given rise to many different varieties.
