Sierra Leonean Yulisa Amadu Maddy is a playwright, theater director, performing artist, choreographer, and novelist. He became interested in the images and messages projected by children's books about Africa during a recent professorship at the University of Iowa. In an interview, he discusses the false images of Africa created by Westerners, the “global village” idea in publishing, recent favorite African picture books, and the book Shaka, King of the Zulus.
