      The article presents a field study on the typography in the Ottoman Empire from the mid-19th century to the early 20th century. Topics discussed include the appearance of private presses and mass publication; dynamic network of activities, such as punchcutting, typefounding, printing, publishing, and journalism during the late Ottoman period; and the emergence of typography before the 1928 Script Reform. Also mentioned is factors effecting field emergence such as population growth and the typographic history of Turkey.
