    • Abstract:
The authors convey their concerns on the use of identity theory to evaluate the function of normative identities in living with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). They suggest ways to expand constructs of the theory to study people with HIV. The meaning of HIV as part of identity work may be modified to be more congruent with the self-concept of those infected. HIV's inclusion and the possibility of loss of some identities could change the hierarchy of salience and prominence of identities.
