The article explores the rise of history as a figure of thought in contemporary art in South and Southeast Asia. It references the 2011 Singapore Biennale at the NTU Center for Contemporary Art in Singapore and the 2016 Gwanju Biennale in South Korea. The subversion of narratives of historical events in contemporary art is discussed, as well as the opportunity to explore provided by the region's history to artists.
