- Abstract: Suffragist leaders Alice Paul and Lucy Burns wanted an amendment to the U.S. Constitution. Beginning in 1913 with the Congressional Union for Woman Suffrage (CU) and continuing after the CU became the National Woman's Party (NWP) in 1916, Paul and Burns encouraged the use of different tactics to get support for a federal amendment for women's suffrage. After Wilson won election to a second term in office, members of the NWP began showing up to stand outside the White House in January 1917. The NWP believed that Wilson was not doing enough to advocate for the passage of the amendment. [Extracted from the article]
