      I was in a PhD program in English right around the same time as Dorothy and Strong's narrator. She notices, for instance, that her mother "had told her so many times that she was not disappointed by Dorothy that Dorothy had to assume her mother was very disappointed." In one 18-month span, graduate student workers voted to unionize at 14 institutions, including at Columbia, likely Dorothy's employer and the alma mater of Strong's narrator.
