    • Abstract:
This article presents information about the children's book, "When I Heard the Learn'd Astronomer," by Loren Long. When illustrator Loren Long jumps up to talk about the picture he created for the climax of his newest children's book, "When I Heard the Learn'd Astronomer," based on the poem by Walt Whitman, he thrusts his long-fingered hands deep into the pockets of his jeans. Like his storybook creation, Long talks as if he has discovered the wonder of the universe and, through his books, intends to give this sacred information back to his readers— children, for the most part, but also teachers and parents and people who embrace science and love poetry.
