- Abstract: The article informs about Melvin Van Peebles, Black filmmaker is honored in a "Essential Films" Blu-ray box set from Criterion Collection and gathers several prominent voices to speak about Van Peebles's seismic impact and enduring legacy. Topics include filmmaker in his twenties partly out of a conviction that movies were corrupting Black minds; and direct marketing them to urban Black audiences through soundtracks and grassroots promotional campaigns.
