    • Abstract:
The article focuses on United Nations secretary--general Kofi Annan's alleged resignation. Annan's relationship with the U.S., the host country of the organization's headquarters situated in New York, was harmonious enough at first --in fact, he owes his appointment as secretary-general in December 1996 to massive U.S. support. He was even then seen as an "American man," ready to do America's bidding at any time. The slide began with the invasion of Iraq in March 2003 and hit its lowest point in September 2004 when Annan labeled the American-led war on Iraq "illegal."
