    • Abstract:
The article deals with the increase in the number of sleep centers in the U.S. accredited by the American Academy of Sleep Medicine. There are 1,237 centers, up from 1,000 in 2006 and 915 in 2005. In 1997, there were only 374 sleep laboratories. The society does not track how many facilities are hospital-based versus independently owned. In terms of profitability, sleep laboratories tend to generate more profits than other outpatient services like physical therapy, cardiac rehabilitation and stress tests.
