      The article focuses on the history and development of the Three-Self Patriotic Movement. It traces the events that led to the establishment of a unified church in China beginning from the 1930s when the destruction brought by war and the Great Depression affected the Missionary funding. Moreover, it discusses the emergence of a new National Church, which was propelled by the reinstitution of toleration of religious worship in 1978 following the death of Mao Zedong in 1976.
