      The article discusses the possible impact of the decline in the number of books being published. The author feels that the disappearance of books as a central force in the American culture would be a catastrophic event that would alter the way in which people think. Concerns that have been raised regarding the declining impact that books have on society are discussed. The possibility that people will no longer read novels in the future is discussed. Changes which have occurred regarding the way in which colleges treat books are mentioned.
