      The article explores options available to small hospitals in order to survive. The common scenario among America's rural hospitals is presented in relation to the courses of action they may take. The partnership of McDowell Hospital and Mission Hospital is described along with the experience of Corning Hospital with Guthrie Health. The role of the board of trustees is explained in seeking affiliation including areas for consideration. Also provided are suggestions on how the entities in an affiliation can co-exist peacefully.
