    • Abstract:
This article examines the poetic identity of 15th century Spanish poet Antón de Montoro in the context of his socioeconomic status as a convert from Judaism, a merchant, and a burgher through his writings and correspondence with peers. It explains that late medieval Andalusian poets like de Montoro struggled to define themselves favorably within their social setting by adopting a poetic voice that reflected the social status which they aimed to project. The article describes the correspondence with peers through which de Montoro's poetic identity was forged, including cases where he was praised for his literary elegance but degraded for his Jewish lineage and lack of noble ancestry.
