    • Abstract:
The article rethinks the social and racial history of early minstrelsy. It overturns scholar Eric Lott's construct of love of African Americans through white working-class solidarity and theft of their cultural heritage. It argues on the importance of race and racism to the expression of anxieties of white people over waged capitalism. It traces the source of rascality and surplus of African American slave performance and discusses discourses on white slavery and African American insurgency.
