- Abstract: A literary criticism is presented on the book "Iola Leroy, or Shadows Uplifted" by Frances Ellen Watkins Harper. The book's depiction of the relationship between the U.S. education of Native Americans and African Americans during the second half of the 19th century is discussed. The differentiation between African Americans and Native Americans within "Iola Leroy, or Shadows Uplifted," including in regard to savagery and civilization, is discussed.
