The growth of the grey labor force--composed mainly of full-time workers older than age 65--has been exceptionally strong in recent decades. Declining retirement benefits, coupled with increasing longevity, have set the stage for the growth of this segment of the labor market. Yet, older workers find their options for well-paid work often are limited by age discrimination, and their experience on the shop floor can be disappointing because the jobs they land often are much less rewarding than the ones they held during their prime working years.
