The article focuses on the Kroomen of Sierra Leone, who were employed by the British Royal Navy to patrol the slave coast of West Africa. Topics discussed include duties of the Royal Navy's Preventative Squadron, origin of the Kroomen, and reason Kroomen were oppose to the slave trade. It also reveals why the Head Krooman or his lieutenant dealt out punishment directly for those who stepped out of line or performed poorly.
