    • Abstract:
The article discusses New Zealand's history by thinking beyond its origins as a settler colony to a history of what the author argues was a garrison colony, and to the achievement of a garrisoned sovereignty by 1870. Topics covered include the British possession of New Zealand, the presence of military garrisons as a testimony to the commitment of the British administration to secure British colonization and investment in the country, and the transfer of power to settler state by the 1870s.
