    • Abstract:
In this encyclical, composed shortly after Vatican Council II, Pope Paul VI addresses the problem of world poverty. He proposes that the issue is widespread and severe and therefore in need of international attention. He emphasizes the universal destination of goods, which he argues places limitations on the rights to private ownership and free trade. Paul calls for attentiveness to the needs of the poor and he encourages the virtue of solidarity. While he focuses on economic development, Paul insists that true development cultivates the growth of what is fully human, including knowledge, virtue, and spiritual concern.
