    • Abstract:
This article provides an overview of young-adult adventure fiction. Adventure novels have been popular with young adults for centuries. Their emphasis on engaging plots and thrills makes these novels particularly suited for readers still developing more attuned literary skills. Rather than being simplistic versions of literary novels, however, the best adventure novels manage to put compelling characters into dangerous scenarios and build a sense of empowerment and agency along the way. This article considers the Airborn (2004) by Kenneth Oppel, The White Darkness (2007) by Geraldine McCaughrean, and the series Percy Jackson and the Olympians (2005-9) by Rick Riordan.
