    • Abstract:
The author discusses the speech of American writer Lionel Shriver at the Brisbane Writers Festival in September 2016. He mentions Shriver was invited to discuss community and belonging, but gave a talk about identity politics and fiction which criticized the idea of political correctness and cultural appropriation. He states that Shriver espoused the right of writers to make characters and speak in the voices of people culturally and ethnically different from themselves.
