      Kwame Alexander's picture book The Undefeated - recently longlisted for the National Book Award - has an unusual backstory. After Alexander adapted the poem for the picture book, he says, "the gods decided that they were going to step in and make it possible for the greatest portrait artist in America, Kadir Nelson, to illustrate it.
