      The article explores VERY FEW WALLED TOWNS escaped the perils of war during the crisis of the mid-seventeenth century in Ireland. The actions of soldiers under the command of Oliver Cromwell at Drogheda and Wexford led to demographic catastrophes in these areas, a trend reflected across Ireland throughout the turmoil of the 1640s and 1650s.
