    • Abstract:
This article reports that the use of personal experience has engendered brilliant critical analysis of gender issues in the literary works of both female and male authors, as well as in other cultural arenas. It has also allowed critics to demonstrate, by freeing previously suppressed voices responding personally to texts and to the world, that gender is not simply an interesting footnote to muse over after the real work is done, but is in fact central, in that it inflects, in a variety of ways, all of the more "traditional" themes critics explicate and all of the standards that women authors apply.
