This article focuses on the plays of playwright Lynn Nottage. In her plays, Nottage is an intrepid traveler. She will go anywhere and try just about anything to make the theatrical experience full and rewarding. The play Mud, River, Stone is about a middle-class African-American husband and wife who lose their way somewhere in Africa and land in a wilderness hotel. The play Crumbs From the Table of Joy is about a teenage girl and her displaced southern family in post-World War II Brooklyn in New York. Nottage's play is a cartography of complex human interactions.
