    • Abstract:
This article profiles Padraic Colum, a poet, playwright and author. Colum was born in Ireland, but it was not until the age of seven, when his mother, brothers, and sister went to live in County Cavan with his grandmother that he began to hear the stories that are part and parcel of Irish tradition. Three of his collections of stories, The Golden Fleece and the Heroes Who Lived Before Achilles (1921), The Voyagers (1925), and The Big Tree of Bunlahy (1933), were chosen as Newbery Medal Honor books.
