    • Abstract:
The article provides biographical information on American poet Emily Dickinson. Dickinson's life differed both from that of the typical poet and of the typical woman of her time. Unlike the literary men she knew, hers was in no way a public or professional life. It was private and domestic, centered in the home and in family affairs. However, unlike the life of most women of her social status, hers was a peculiarly private life--solitary and self-focused, in contrast to lives lived in the service of others--husband, children, or, in the case of unmarried women, parents and the families of relatives.
