      This article features the works of author and illustrator Eleanor Estes. She was one of four children in a poor family. After high school in 1924, she became a children's librarian. In 1931, she won a scholarship to attend the library school at Pratt Institute, where she met her husband, a library administrator and professor. Several awards were given to her including the American Library Association Newbery Medal in 1952 for Ginger Pye.
