- Abstract: This article chronicles the early life of Jane Austen. Unrealistic characters and sentimental plots typified early nineteenth-century novels until English author Jane Austen (1775-1817) popularized the literary genre of domestic realism. Jane Austen was born on December 16, 1775 in Steventon, Hampshire, England. Jane's closest childhood friend was her older sister Cassandra, born in 1773. In 1785, Jane and Cassandra attended the Abbey School in the town of Reading. Between 1787 and 1793, Austen wrote several satirical short novels that parodied the unrealistic way that women were portrayed in sentimental novels. These include "The Beautiful Cassandra: A Novel in Twelve Chapters" and "Frederic and Elfrida: A Novel."
