    • Abstract:
The article provides an overview and analysis of the development of public libraries for African Americans in the South during the era of de jure segregation and through the civil rights movement of the 1960s. It observes that the history of public libraries for African Americans parallels the history of segregated schooling. In a number of localities from Kentucky to Alabama, black high school principals were often leading members of the African American community organizations involved in the negotiations attempting to push for the provision of library services.
