    • Abstract:
The article discusses political, social, religious, and legal precedents leading up to a controversy over whether health-care-reform legislation being debated in the U.S. in 2009 would give government too much influence in difficult medical decisions such as those related to the prolongation of life. Special attention is given to the case of Karen Ann Quinlan, who died after spending many years in a coma.
