      This article identifies and characterizes the Virginia Woolf essays that were published only in the U.S. The survey was used by the author to posit explanation for American scholars' embrace of Woolf in the 1970s. She highlights the readiness of American readers of the 70s and 80s to see Woolf's democratic tendencies, feminist and pacifist politics, and theory as obvious.
