- Abstract: An essay is presented which examines the role of African Americans in social change within their communities during the late 18th century. Particular focus is given to themes of motherhood and intimacy in the relationships between an enslaved resident of Newport, Rhode Island named Phillis, the teacher and religious leader Sarah Osborn, who owned Phillis' son Bobey, and the abolitionist minister Samuel Hopkins. According to the author, an exchange between Osborn and Phillis regarding the possible sale of Bobey led Osborn into a spiritual crisis which ultimately resulted in Hopkins' conversion to abolitionism. It is suggested that historians have overlooked the role of everyday personal exchange in social change. Details on Osborn's spiritual reflections as recorded in her diary are also presented.
