    • Abstract:
A literary criticism of the novel "The Remains of the Day" by Kazuo Ishiguro is presented. It argues that recognition of world-historical influence in the novel makes the reader more acutely aware of how he or she shares in alienation of the character of protagonist Mr. Stevens. Ishiguro elaborates an ethical position in the novel through the formal restraint of the novel and its instances of mimetic failure.
