    • Abstract:
The article analyzes Jacqueline Woodson's African-American children's picture books where the centrality of food in children's lives defines who they are. Topics discussed include how some of her picture books show that those who grow and prepare food bind families together, her "Visiting Day" that functions as the family glue where food preparation helps the child maintain a connection with an incarcerated father and the role food play in children's lives as demonstrated in her work.
