      The article focuses on the term "romance" in early modern fiction. Topics include Renaissance literature, types of "romance" from the chivalric type in "Orlando furioso," by Ludovico Ariosto, the pastoral depicted in "Arcadia," by Jacopo Sannazaro and Greek romances in "Aethiopica," by Heliodorus and the unique version of "romance" for 16th century readers and authors. Other topics include the history of "romance" and how the transformations of romance mimics culture's own transition.
