- Abstract: The article presents an overview of academic discussions presented at a conference in Lima, Peru, 2010 about the role of religion in Latin American social movements. The central hypothesis that the role of religion in activism is underestimated in standard social historiography is discussed, as well as a contrasting secular ethnography hypothesis that religion reinforces the influence of historic colonialist oppression in social movements.
[ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
