    • Abstract:
The article discusses the determinants of illness and functional impairment in older women in the U.S. as examined by the 2009 Calasanti and 2012 Family Caregiver Alliance studies. The Affordable Care Act and Institute of Medicine reports are cited for identifying the role of direct care workers and family caregivers in long-term services and support while the feminist gerontology studies of Cruikshank and Freixas, Luque and Reina are noted to focus on the variables of gender, race and class.
