- Abstract: Critical analysis of how teachers and students are represented in films can serve as a powerful activity in social foundations courses, providing an opportunity to reflect on a myriad of sociocultural issues relating to education. In this work I (1) review literature on how others have examined representations of teachers in films; (2) share findings from my analysis of over fifty popular films examining how the meaning of teaching has been constructed in these films, and how this relates to constructions of race, class, and gender; and (3) illustrate what might be learned about teaching through investigating teacher representations in films by preservice teachers in social foundations. Three overarching themes—‘Fast Times,’ ‘Dangerous Minds,’‘ Stand on Me’— are used to frame the analysis within which race, class, and gender themes are illustrated. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
