    • Abstract:
The present study, based on a survey of 101 college students who have chosen and are persisting in an education major, had a two-fold purpose: (1) to determine preservice teachers' perceptions of teaching as a career, and (2) to determine differences in perceptions among groups of preservice teachers categorized on the basis of a variety of background variables. Factors related to teaching most often perceived as encouraging were: contributions to humanity, job availability, job security, fringe benefits, and working conditions. The factor most often perceived as discouraging was salary. Insights gained in the study can be of significant value to those who are seeking to attract and retain capable individuals for the teaching profession in a time of teacher-shortages.
